Listen, America 29 July 2005 9:24 a.m.

It's not really your fault, you know
that they don't make electric cars
and our towns spread out over the land
with no trains running between them.

And there's not a whole lot you can do
to resurrect the prairie
from beneath the pavement.

But would it be suffering
to move close to the grocery store?
Would you really be suffering
if you rode your bike to work?

Compared to those on our same planet
with no water
no food
no money
no home
no family
no legs
would you really be suffering
if you made a few sacrifices
so that our grandchildren can breathe clean air?

It's not our fault
these capitalist systems are in place
that ignore the natural earth
and have destroyed so much of it.

But we are all in control of our own lives.
Because electric cars are nowhere in sight,
because the poles are melting,
because our towns are not set up in a sustainable way
we must decide that we, ourselves
are not going to contribute
to the destruction.

We're raised to believe we should never have to suffer.
But how can you justify driving a car
which destroys the air
and robs our grandchildren of nature
just so you can get somewhere faster?

Little children meet landmines and radiation
for your convenience.

You don't control the world's ingrained,
destructive, capitalist systems.
But, because they are in place
we must live responsibly.
Do you think
you could sacrifice a little comfort
for the people who are really suffering right now?

Or in the words of the polar bear:
"FUCK YOU FOR DRIVING!!"
